Our Earthly Destiny

“For this reason the Son of Man was manifested, to destroy the works of the devil. (I John 3:8).”

“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and Power, and He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil (Acts 10:17).”

The above verses make mention of the earthly ministry of Jesus. He destroyed the works of the devil. These works include sin, sickness, disease, death, storms, fear, un-forgiveness, and shame. Satan received authority over all the earth at the fall of man (Luke 4:6). However, with the resurrection of Jesus, authority was given back to human beings (Mat 16:19, 28:18; Luke 10:19). The first Adam sinned and gave away our God-given authority. The second Adam came and recovered that lost authority. We need both power and authority to do the will of God. Dutch Sheets writes about the distinction between power and authority: “Power is the strength of force needed to rule; authority is the right to do so” (1). God has given us authority through Jesus Christ and He has given us Power through the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This makes it possible for us to now be co-laborers with God and to rule over all the earth. Jesus came and redeemed us from slavery to a sinful, selfish, Satan-serving nature, into a born-again, new creation, that co-labors with God. The question becomes, “what shall I do now, that I have been given power and authority to do God’s will on the earth?” Bill Johnson writes:

“[God] wants the reality of heaven to invade this rebel-torn world, to transform it, to bring it under His headship. What is free to operate in heaven–joy, peace, wisdom, health, wholeness, and all the other good promises we read about in the Bible-should be free to operate here on this planet, in your home, your church, your business, and your school. What is not free to operate there, sickness, disease, spiritual bondage, and sin, should not be free to operate here, period. That, in a nutshell, is our assignment as believers on earth, and that is what my church and certainly many others in the Body of Christ are working toward with more focus and energy than ever before. We are out to destroy the works of the devil. It’s an awesome way to live!” (2)

Satan has never lost any of his power. What he lost was his authority to exercise that power. Now we have been given authority and power over him. Although Christians often state otherwise, Scripture nowhere says that Jesus delivered us from or stripped Satan of his power at Calvary. Instead, Jesus dealt with Satan’s authority” (3) Satan and the kingdom of darkness still operate on the earth. They are destroying peoples lives by sin, sickness, disease, depression, and all the things that exist on earth but not in heaven. Our destiny is to destroy those works around us. This is what Jesus did, and this is what He has called us to do. “As My Father has sent Me, so now I send you” (John 20:21).

The Bible states: “The God of Peace will crush Satan under your feet…” (Romans 16:20). Notice in this verse whose feet are doing the crushing… Your feet are going to crush Satan! The Greek word for “crush” here means, “to trample upon, break in pieces, shatter, bruise, grind down, and smash” (4). This is our destiny. One of the first Messianic prophecies in scripture states that the “Seed” of a woman will crush the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15). Jesus disarmed and defeated principalities and powers, making them a public spectacle (Col 2:15), and the gave us the authority to do the same (Luke 10:19). We, who are the seed of a woman, are empowered by God and commissioned to crush the head of Satan. “God could have destroyed the devil and his host with a word. But instead He chose to defeat darkness through His delegated authority-those made in His image who were lovers of God by choice” (5). This is our destiny, to destroy the works of the devil.
